In our
information economy, a companys success depends on the
collective skills of its employees. Given our rapidly changing
world, skills need to be continually upgraded in order for
your company to retain its competitive edge.
Recent
studies have shown that companies that spend the most on employee
training and development financially outperform those that
spend the least. One reason may be that training contributes
to the retention of key employees. The current cost of replacing
a valued staff member is estimated to be 150% of salary. Investing
in your staffs development pays dividends long into
the future.
Career
Management Consulting develops tailored programs to help strengthen
your staffs performance and business results. Here is
a sampling of programs we have recently developed for clients.
RECENT PROJECTS
Financial Analysis
A multinational food services company assessed the key
competencies of its merchandising staff. One of the areas
most in need of development was financial analysis, a critical
skill for merchandisers, who have to determine which products
are the most profitable. We consulted with internal experts
to design and deliver a two-part course that gives managers
the tools to evaluate and predict results with greater
precision. This program is a key step in the wide-scale
effort to increase the competitive edge of this 140 year-old
company.
Communication
One of our clients was struggling with organizational silos.
Communication between departments was minimal, problems took
too long to resolve and customers suffered. We developed a
one-day seminar aimed at breaking down the barriers to communication.
We focused on building relationships, problem solving
and communicating efficiently. Cross-functional teams
attended the training and management monitored their progress
afterwards. The result was improved teamwork
and faster resolution of problems affecting customers.
Editorial Skills
A prestigious international newspaper was struggling with
how to take a venerable, respected brand and make it work
on the web. One of the key issues was upgrading the editorial
skills of those who produced its on-line presence. We conducted
a thorough needs analysis, then worked with the editors to
develop a series of seminars exploring how to take advantage
of multimedia while maintaining the integrity of news reporting.
The quality of the site has improved and page views have increased.
The programs have been packaged into a curriculum that will
be repeated yearly for new staff members.
People
Management
A growing publishing firm in Connecticut realized that
their turnover was much higher than the industry average.
Through exit interviews, it became clear that poor management
was a contributing factor, so they decided some basic training
was in order. Working closely with the internal Human Resources
team, we designed a series of courses on people management,
covering topics such as leading by example, making time
to manage and giving honest feedback. The classes
included opportunities for participants to assess their skills
and formulate action plans for addressing weaknesses. Employee
morale improved and turnover dropped as a result of these
and other development efforts.
