THE CAREER ASSESSMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS

The Career Assessment Program is for students who want to gain a better understanding of how their natural talents and abilities can help to define a future career. Assessment helps to increase a student’s appreciation for his or her unique personality, style, interests, skills, and values. Career options are examined within the context of this knowledge.

The Career Assessment Program includes three sessions:

First Meeting - 2 hours: Student meets with career coach to review life experiences and career beliefs. During the second hour, the student completes the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which assesses personality style, and the Strong Interest Inventory, which compares a student’s interests to those of professionals in over 100 different occupations. Student is given the Self-Directed Search, which examines skills and interests, and a review of accomplishments to complete for the following session.

Second Meeting - 2 hours: Student meets with career coach to interpret and integrate the results of all assessments and exercises. Student begins to research career options.

Third Meeting - 1 hour:
Career coach prepares a written report, summarizing results and recommending career directions worthy of further exploration. Student and parents meet with coach to discuss the findings.

Information included:
How to continue the career exploration process, including internships and informational interviews
How to use this information when selecting colleges and majors
Employment trends which affect career choice
List of books and web sites to use as resources

RESULTS
Students emerge from the Career Assessment Program with increased focus and an understanding of how their strengths can be assets in potential careers. Many parents report increased motivation in school and enhanced self-esteem as a result of making this vital link to the future.
